The Ontario approach

Masonry Repairs & Repointing, done the way it should be in Mississauga.

Masonry in Ontario faces a brutal annual cycle: 100+ freeze-thaw events every winter, driving rain, road salt spray, and UV that bakes mortar dry in summer. The joints go first. Once the mortar sits recessed more than 6mm below the brick face, water pools in the wall rather than shedding off, and the slow failure of the whole structure begins.

Repointing, raking out the failed mortar to 25mm depth and rebuilding with a fresh, correctly-matched mix, is the single most effective restoration any masonry building can receive. Done properly, it buys 40 to 60 years of further life. Done badly (wrong mortar type, insufficient depth, brick faces chipped in the process) it accelerates the damage.

We match mortar by era. Pre-1920s homes built with soft red brick get a soft lime-based mortar that allows the wall to flex without cracking the brick faces. Modern homes in Mississauga with hard pressed brick get a Type S cement mix appropriate to the substrate. Getting this wrong is the most common mistake amateur masons make, and the one that causes brick-face spalling in winters to come.

Why Safeway Contracts Ltd for this

What makes our masonry repairs & repointing work last.

25mm minimum joint depth

Properly raked joints, not surface-skimmed. Shallow repoints fail in under 5 years.

Mortar matched to era

Lime mortar for pre-1920s brick, Type S for modern. We never use Portland on soft old brick.

Heritage brick salvage

90%+ of original brick retained. Replacements sourced from Ontario salvage yards.

Structural stitching

Cracked or bulging walls stabilised with stainless helical rod stitching, less invasive than rebuild.

15-year workmanship warranty

Written warranty on every repoint, transferable to future owners.

Our process

Four steps from quote to sign-off.

01

Survey

How do I know if my mortar needs repointing?
If you can scrape mortar out of the joints with a house-key, or the joint surface is recessed more than 6mm below the brick face, it needs repointing. We'll inspect free of charge.
Why does mortar matching matter?
Using a hard, modern Portland mix on soft old brick causes the brick faces to spall off in freeze-thaw cycles. We match mortar hardness to the brick.
Can you save the original brick or do we replace?
In most cases we retain 90%+ of the original brick, only severely spalled faces need replacement. We always prioritise salvage.
Can you match the original brick if some need replacing?
Yes. We source from Brampton Brick, Hanson, Belden and architectural salvage yards across Ontario.
How long does repointing last?
A properly executed repoint should last 40 to 60 years, often longer than the original mortar. Our repointing carries a 15-year workmanship warranty.
Can you handle historic or designated heritage buildings?
Yes. We work to Ontario Heritage Act guidelines and have experience with homes in designated heritage districts. We document work with before/during/after photos and submit method statements where required.
What if some bricks need replacing entirely?
We source matching brick from Brampton Brick, Hanson, Belden and three architectural salvage yards across Ontario. For heritage matches, we hand-pick from salvage. Where no match is possible, we can rearrange sound bricks from the rear of the property so the face is uniform.
