The Ontario approach

Pothole Repairs, done the way it should be in Ashgove.

Potholes in Ontario are not caused by "bad asphalt". They are caused by water. Water penetrates the surface through a crack, freezes, expands by 9%, and blows out the top layer. Every pothole you have ever seen started as a hairline crack that was not sealed in time.

Permanent repair requires the same attention to process as new paving. We saw-cut the failed area to square edges (not the "throw cold-patch into a round hole" approach), check for base failure by probing the surrounding asphalt, rebuild the granular base where it has softened, apply a tack coat on all vertical faces, and fill with hot-laid HL3 or HL4 asphalt in two compacted lifts if the hole is deep.

For surface cracks under 12mm wide, hot rubberised crack sealant is the single best preventative maintenance available. Sealed cracks do not become potholes. Unsealed ones do, within 2 to 3 Ontario winters.

Why Safeway Contracts Ltd for this

What makes our pothole repairs work last.

Saw-cut square edges

Clean vertical faces bond properly with new asphalt. Round-hole cold-patch always fails.

Hot-mix HL3/HL4 asphalt

Permanent repair uses the same hot-laid mix as new paving. Not the bagged cold-patch that pops out by spring.

Base rebuild where failed

We probe for sponginess. Soft base gets rebuilt before asphalt goes back in.

Crack sealing with hot rubber

Preventative maintenance that stops tomorrow's potholes forming today. Cheapest paving investment available.

Annual maintenance contracts

Property managers and strata boards get inspection + patch + seal on a fixed annual fee.

Our process

Four steps from quote to sign-off.

01

Assess

Check for base failure (sponginess around the hole), determines repair depth.

02

Saw-cut

Cut square edges to sound asphalt, excavate failed material.

03

Rebuild base (if needed)

Replace and compact granular base where original has failed.

04

Tack & fill

Tack coat on vertical faces, hot-mix infill in two lifts if deep, compact.

Cold patch vs. hot-mix?
Cold patch is emergency-only, useful for getting through winter until spring repairs. Hot-mix is the only permanent repair.
How fast can you come out?
For safety-critical potholes (parking lots, private roads with public access) typically same or next day. For residential driveways, within a week.
Is crack sealing worth it?
Yes, dramatically. Sealing cracks when 3 to 6mm wide prevents them becoming the holes you are paying to repair two winters later.
Can you repair potholes in freezing weather?
Emergency cold-patch repairs yes, any time of year. Permanent hot-mix repair needs surface temperatures above 5°C.
Do you offer annual maintenance contracts?
Yes. For property managers, strata and commercial clients we offer annual or bi-annual contracts covering inspection, crack sealing, pothole patching and line re-painting.
How cold is too cold for hot-mix repair?
Permanent hot-mix needs surface temperatures above 5°C. In practice that means April through October in most of Ontario. Winter repairs are cold-patch only, rebooked for spring permanent repair.
Do you repair sinkhole-style potholes from utility trenches?
Yes. Utility settlement is common when the original trench was not properly compacted. We excavate to the utility, rebuild the base with flowable fill or compacted granular, and repave to match.
